Productivity Pickle?  Let’s Start with Learning vs Command and Control

Productivity Pickle?  Let’s Start with Learning vs Command and Control

When leaders talk about productivity, the conversation often revolves around efficiency, output, and getting more done with less. This often means putting the squeeze on your people, adding undue pressure on your them and pushing them into a proverbial pickle – there is another solution.

According to Peter M. Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline, sustainable productivity comes from something deeper: an organization's ability to learn.

Senge argues that the most successful organizations are not those that push people harder, but those that create the conditions where people continuously develop their capabilities, challenge assumptions, and understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture.

At its’ heart is ethos and to activate it is systems thinking—seeing how decisions, behaviours, incentives, and relationships interact across the organization. Low productivity is rarely an individual problem. More often, it is the result of disconnected teams, competing priorities, unclear direction, or systems that unintentionally create barriers to performance.

Senge also highlights the importance of personal mastery, encouraging individuals to clarify what matters most, strengthen their skills, and focus their energy on meaningful outcomes. When combined with a shared vision and mission, people move beyond compliance and become genuinely committed to achieving results with values-based behaviours.

Equally important is team learning. Organizations that create space for dialogue, collaboration, and collective problem-solving make better decisions, reduce conflict, and respond more effectively to change. This is how productivity becomes sustainable rather than performative.

Ultimately, Senge's message is simple: organizations improve performance when they improve their capacity to learn. Productivity grows when people understand the system, and how they contribute, trust one another, gather around common purpose, and continuously adapt together.

What This Means for Leaders

Are fire drills crowding out strategic thinking at your organization?  Are you feeling pickled in your organization? A place where silos, misalignment, unclear decision-making, or inconsistent collaboration are commonplace?  The solution may not be tighter controls—it may be a stronger culture.
